1 Thessalonians 5:16

“Always be joyful.  Never stop praying.  Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

I’ve been keeping a thanksgiving journal since September. The Bible study Mark and I lead has been studying the book of Hebrews this year. Our theme has been:

Ambitious Faith; Cultivating a Tenacious Trust in a Powerful God

I believe one way to strengthen my trust in God is to be aware of Him in my every day. Having a thanksgiving journal keeps me looking for those things where I have seen God. My journal is filled with the ordinary to the extraordinary, and everything in between.

I find that pondering my day, trying to remember the ways I’ve seen God, or just have appreciated the little things of life brings me joy and a greater awareness of God’s presence, and in that joy and awareness I look beyond the gift, or the circumstance, and I see how intimately God is involved in my life!

Thanksgiving begins all about the gifts, but becomes about the Giver!

I have also found that by writing things in my journal and choosing to thank God even before I fully understand or see the full picture, I realize He is with me in it. He has already seen the whole thing and He knows how to see me through.

Thanksgiving gives me a different perspective of my circumstances

By thanking God in all circumstances I am confessing that God is over all, and is in all. I acknowledge that God is able to work all things together for good. I relinquish my will, my ways, and my control into the hands of a mighty and powerful God who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond anything I could think or imagine!

Thanksgiving puts my circumstances in God’s hands

Always being joyful, praying without stopping, and being thankful in all circumstances isn’t possible on your own. As I wrote before, God’s ways go against human nature. But when you choose to believe that God is who He says He is, and choose to believe that you are who God says you are because you belong to Jesus Christ, then you will choose to trust and obey, with full assurance that God intends everything you face for your good!
